    CFA Level II topic weights

CFA Institute publishes a weight range for each topic. These are the weight ranges on CFA Institute's current Level II exam page.

At least half the exam sits in five heavier topics: Ethical and Professional Standards, Financial Statement Analysis, Equities, Fixed Income and Portfolio Construction. Every item set carries the same points, so a weak heavy topic usually costs two or three whole cases rather than a few scattered questions.

    TOPIC: FINANCIAL STATEMENT ANALYSIS

    Halvorsen Industrial

    0/4Exam pace 12:00

Ingrid Solberg is an equity analyst at Nordlys Capital, an Oslo-based investment manager that runs concentrated portfolios of Nordic industrial companies. Solberg covers Halvorsen Industrial, a listed manufacturer of hydraulic systems for offshore vessels. Halvorsen Industrial prepares its financial statements under IFRS and reports in euros. Its financial year ends on 31 December.

On 1 January 2026, Halvorsen Industrial paid €48.0 million in cash for 30% of the ordinary shares of Brekke Marine, a privately held designer of winch-control software. Before the transaction, Halvorsen Industrial held no shares in Brekke Marine. The remaining 70% of Brekke Marine is owned by its two founders, who continue to run the company day to day. Under the shareholder agreement, Halvorsen Industrial appoints two of the seven members of the Brekke Marine board and has the right to be consulted on the annual budget, but it cannot direct Brekke Marine's operating or financing decisions on its own. Halvorsen Industrial's management has concluded that it has significant influence but not control or joint control, and it accounts for the investment as an associate using the equity method.

At the acquisition date, the book value of Brekke Marine's identifiable net assets was €120.0 million. A valuation commissioned by Halvorsen Industrial found that the fair value of Brekke Marine's capitalised software exceeded its book value by €20.0 million. The software has a remaining useful life of ten years and is amortised on a straight-line basis with no residual value. The fair values of all other identifiable assets and liabilities were equal to their book values. Any excess of the purchase price over Halvorsen Industrial's share of the fair value of identifiable net assets is treated as goodwill, which is not amortised. Solberg confirms from the notes that no impairment of the investment was recognised in 2026.

Exhibit 1 summarises the acquisition, and Exhibit 2 shows Brekke Marine's results for 2026. Brekke Marine paid its only dividend of the year in December 2026. There were no transactions between the two companies other than the share purchase and the dividend, so no adjustment for unrealised profits is needed.

Solberg is building a model of Halvorsen Industrial's 2026 results. Her first step is to reconstruct the amounts that the company should report for the associate, so that she can check them against the published accounts. She plans to show the share of profit of the associate as a separate line in her income statement model, below operating profit, as Halvorsen Industrial does in its own presentation.

Solberg's colleague, Mats Eide, manages a portfolio that already owns Halvorsen Industrial shares. Eide has heard that Halvorsen Industrial may buy the founders' remaining shares within two years, which would give it control of Brekke Marine. He asks Solberg how Halvorsen Industrial's reported ratios would change if it already controlled Brekke Marine and consolidated it, rather than reporting Brekke Marine as an associate. To keep the comparison simple, Solberg agrees to assume that net income attributable to Halvorsen Industrial's shareholders would be the same under both approaches and that the only difference is the method of presentation. Exhibit 3 shows Halvorsen Industrial's 2026 revenue and its net income before the share of profit of the associate.

Eide also asks whether the dividend Brekke Marine paid in December will increase Halvorsen Industrial's reported profit for 2026. Solberg says she will answer once she has finished reconstructing the investment account, because the answer depends on how the equity method treats distributions from an associate.

Solberg notes that Halvorsen Industrial's investor presentation describes the Brekke Marine stake as giving the group a footprint in software, which management expects to support margins over time. She intends to test that claim separately once she has the reported figures right.

    How it works

Three steps, on the real exam timing.

    1. Read the case

A vignette and exhibits, like the exam.

    2. Answer against the clock

Four questions, about 12 minutes a set.

    3. Review what you missed

Every option explained, with the mistake behind each wrong answer.

How the CFA Level II exam works

    Session 1 · 132 min · 11 item sets
    Optional break
    Session 2 · 132 min · 11 item sets

2 unscored trial sets (you won't know which)

About 12 minutes per item set

132 minutes ÷ 11 sets. Allow 3-4 minutes for the case and about 2 per question.

    4 questions per case

Each one has to be answered from the vignette and its exhibits.

    No penalty for guessing

A blank and a wrong answer score the same, so answer everything.

    Exam rules in full

The Level II exam has 22 item sets with 88 multiple-choice questions, split into two sessions of 2 hours 12 minutes (4 hours 24 minutes in total) with an optional break between them. Each session has 11 item sets. Twenty item sets are scored; two are being trialled and are not scored, and you will not know which ones.

Each item set opens with a header that names the topic and its point value, for example "TOPIC: QUANTITATIVE METHODS TOTAL POINT VALUE OF THIS QUESTION SET IS 12 POINTS". Financial Statement Analysis questions follow IFRS unless a question says US GAAP. Topics can appear in either session. You must also complete a Practical Skills Module to receive your result.

The ten topics are the same. The skill that changes is reading: the right number is in the case, and the wrong answers are built from the wrong exhibit row or the wrong method.

How to work a Level II item set

    1. 1

      Read the four questions first

Skim the stems before the case, so you know which figures you are looking for.

    2. 2

      Map the vignette

Note where each exhibit sits and which paragraph changes an assumption. Many traps are a later sentence that overrides an exhibit.

    3. 3

      Answer in order of certainty

Each question is scored separately. Bank the ones you can do, then return to the long calculation.

    4. 4

      Move on at 12 minutes

A set you leave at 12 minutes costs less than the two sets you rush at the end of the session.

Every CFAQuiz explanation shows the working and says which mistake produces each wrong answer, so you can tell whether you pulled the wrong number or used the wrong method.

How every item set is checked

    Written to the LOS

Each case is mapped to the 2026 Level II learning outcome statements, with wrong answers built from specific mistakes.

    Recomputed and re-solved

Every number is recalculated, and every question is re-solved independently before it is published.

    Corrected in public

Any question can be flagged from inside the app. Flagged sets are reviewed and corrected.

    Level II questions

How many questions are on the CFA Level II exam?

88 multiple-choice questions in 22 item sets of four, across two sessions of 132 minutes. Twenty of the item sets are scored and two are unscored trial sets.

How long should I spend on each item set?

About 12 minutes: each 132-minute session has 11 item sets. A workable split is 3 to 4 minutes to read the case and about 2 minutes per question.

Is Level II harder than Level I?

It is different. The ten topics are the same, tested in more depth and always inside a case, so the skill is finding the right figure and the right model rather than recalling a definition. Pass rates are similar: in August 2026, 43% of Level I candidates and 45% of Level II candidates passed (CFA Institute). Source

How many hours do I need for Level II?

CFA Institute reports that successful candidates study on average over 300 hours per level. Many candidates plan for more at Level II because the case format takes longer to practise.

What are the Level II topic weights?

Ethical and Professional Standards, Financial Statement Analysis, Equities, Fixed Income and Portfolio Construction are 10-15% each. Quantitative Methods, Economics, Corporate Finance, Derivatives and Risk Management, and Alternative Investments are 5-10% each. These are the weight ranges on CFA Institute's current Level II exam page.

Are these real CFA exam questions?

No. CFA Institute does not release past exams. Our item sets are original and mapped to the 2026 Level II learning outcome statements. Use CFA Institute's own mock exams as the final check.

Can I try Level II for free?

Yes. A free account includes 2 Level II topic quizzes and 2 mixed quizzes, with no card required. Level II Basic is €24.95 a month after that.

Is there a free CFA Level II mock exam?

Not on the free plan. Full 22-set Level II mocks on the real 2 × 132-minute timing come with Level II Basic. CFA Institute also provides mock exams to registered candidates; use those as the final check.

What is a CFA Level II item set?

A vignette, which is a written case of one to two pages with exhibits, followed by four multiple-choice questions with three options each. All four questions depend on the case.

Why do some topics have different names in older material?

CFA Institute's 2026 Level II topic outline uses Corporate Issuers, Equity Valuation, Derivatives and Portfolio Management. Its current exam page uses Corporate Finance, Equities, Derivatives and Risk Management, and Portfolio Construction. CFAQuiz uses the current names.
